Market/Macro Update

The broader market continues to buckle under the weight of a heavy geopolitical premium, creating a tape where there is seemingly “no place to hide” for risk-on assets. This immense macro pressure is perfectly reflected in the extreme defensive posturing we are seeing from institutional “smart money.” As you will see in our sentiment data below, major players are refusing to take off their armor, keeping heavy downside protection locked in across the major indices.

Under the hood, the damage is severe but highly targeted. The Technology sector is taking the biggest beating once again today, extending what has been a truly ugly week for the space as investors aggressively dump high-beta growth names. Small Caps are also getting absolutely decimated in this environment, bearing the brunt of the risk-off flush. Instead, capital is seeking shelter wherever it can find it, with Value emerging as the clear winner and the safest place to weather the current storm. In fact, we are actually seeing a surprising amount of green across several value and defensive sectors today as this flight-to-safety rotation plays out.

Interestingly, the Energy sector—which has been the primary beneficiary of these geopolitical shockwaves—is taking a notable breather today. This pullback appears to be driven by circulating headlines regarding the potential opening of the Strait of Hormuz, prompting some relief in the oil markets. We will be keeping a very close eye on this price action over the coming days to determine if we are witnessing a genuine rotation out of the sector, or simply a bout of tactical profit-taking by traders locking in gains on the recent geopolitical spike.
